Distribution of vaccines in Africa is progressing steadily, with the African Union saying 270 million doses have been received.

A national curfew will be imposed in France

Italy extends state of emergency

Apart from the United States, the situation in Europe remains severe.

On January 14 local time, French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Castet and five government ministers, including the ministers of health, education and economy, held a press conference to announce that from January 16, the curfew will be implemented across France from 18 a.m. to 6 a.m. the next morning, and the measure will last for at least 15 days.

In addition, Mr. Castet announced that, from Jan. 18, all citizens of countries outside the European Union who enter France will be required to have a negative test for Novel Coronavirus when they enter the country and will be self-quarantined for seven days after entry before a second test.

In neighboring Italy, the Ministry of Health announced in a January 14 local time announcement that the country’s Council of Ministers had adopted a new anti-epidemic decree, extending the state of emergency until April 30, 2021, and continuing a series of measures to limit the outbreak.

On the same day, British Transport Secretary John Shaps said that the UK will impose a travel ban on Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia and other South American countries from 4 am local time on January 15, due to the recent discovery of a new variant of novel coronavirus in Brazil.

On January 14, Germany reported 1,244 new deaths, the highest number since the outbreak began.
With more than two million new cases now confirmed in Germany, the head of the disease control agency called on employers to try to make staff work from home and warned that the current “city closures” should be tightened further.

The African Union received the first batch of the covid vaccine

The World Health Organization is urging countries to help Africa

More than 3.14 million new cases have been confirmed in Africa, with more than 75,000 deaths.
For many African countries with relatively poor health conditions, the importance of the covid vaccine is self-evident.

African Union Chair and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on January 13 that the African Union has received 270 million doses of vaccine and that the first 50 million doses will arrive in Africa between April and June 2021.

Mr Ramaphosa said Covax, the new vaccine implementation programme set up with the help of the WHO and GAVI, had played a vital role in helping low – and middle-income countries access vaccines on a fair and equitable basis.

Scientists at the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention say at least 60 percent of the African population would need to be vaccinated to significantly slow the spread of novel coronavirus.
However, with a population of 1.5 billion people in Africa, distribution and popularization of vaccines is difficult to imagine.

In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that distribution of the vaccine in Africa “has been uneven,” but added, “This is a huge undertaking that will take time.”

Michael Ryan, director of the WHO’s health emergency programme, called on rich countries to help close the global vaccine inequality gap.
