Lagevrio (molnupiravir) is an antiviral medication developed for influenza treatment, but recent studies have shown its effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2. It inhibits viral RNA polymerase to prevent virus replication. Molnupiravir has the advantage of oral administration and has conducted clinical trials with promising results. A phase 2 trial showed a reduction in the amount of infectious virus, and patients who received it had a shorter time to viral clearance than those with a placebo. A phase 3 trial found that those who received molnupiravir had a lower rate of hospitalization and death than those with a placebo. It is still undergoing clinical trials and shows potential as a COVID-19 treatment. However, there is a risk of developing drug-resistant strains. Additionally, it has potential use in treating other viral diseases, but further research is needed to evaluate its efficacy and safety.
