Description
Nelvir (Nelfinavir) is a prescription medication used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It is classified as a protease inhibitor and works by inhibiting the activity of the HIV protease enzyme, which is necessary for the virus to multiply. Nelvir is manufactured by Cipla Ltd. and comes in the form of tablets.
Composition:
Nelvir contains the active ingredient Nelfinavir, which is a protease inhibitor that works by blocking the activity of the HIV protease enzyme. Each tablet contains 250 mg of Nelfinavir.
Uses:
Nelvir is used in combination with other antiretroviral medications to treat HIV infection in adults and children over the age of 2 years. This medication works by reducing the viral load in the blood and improving the immune system’s ability to fight off infections. It does not cure HIV infection.
Usage and Dosage:
Nelvir should be taken as directed by a healthcare professional. The recommended dose for adults and children over the age of 13 years is 1250 mg (five tablets) twice daily or 750 mg (three tablets) three times daily with food. Children between the ages of 2 and 13 years should be given a dose based on their body weight. It is important to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
Storage Conditions:
Nelvir should be stored at room temperature between 20°C and 25°C. It should be kept in its original container and protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Mechanism of Action:
Nelvir works by inhibiting the activity of the HIV protease enzyme, which is necessary for the virus to multiply. This protease inhibitor binds to the protease enzyme and prevents it from cleaving the viral polyprotein into its individual components, thereby inhibiting the production of new viruses.
Contraindications:
Nelvir is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Nelfinavir or any other component of the medication. It should not be used in patients with severe liver or kidney disease, as it may worsen these conditions. Patients with a history of arrhythmias or taking medications that prolong the QT interval should use this medication with caution.
Interactions:
Nelvir may interact with other medications, including antacids, rifampin, St. John’s wort, and other medications used to treat HIV infection. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking before starting this medication.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Nelvir include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache, fatigue, and rash. Other rare side effects may include elevated liver enzymes, pancreatitis, and abnormal heart rhythms.
