Gemtide, also known as Teriparatide injection, is a synthetic form of a human parathyroid hormone used to treat osteoporosis. It contains Teriparatide as the active ingredient and is manufactured by Orthokem (Alkem Laboratories Ltd.). Each cartridge of Gemtide contains 250 mcg of Teriparatide, formulated as an injection.
Uses:
Gemtide is used to treat osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become brittle and weak. It is also used to improve bone density and reduce the risk of fractures in postmenopausal women and men with osteoporosis.
Usage and Dosage:
Gemtide is administered as a subcutaneous injection once daily. The recommended dosage is 20 mcg per day, with a maximum duration of two years. The injection should be taken at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels of the drug in the body.
Storage Conditions:
Gemtide should be stored in a refrigerator at a temperature between 2°C to 8°C. Once opened, the cartridge should be used within 28 days.
Mechanism of Action:
Teriparatide acts on parathyroid hormone receptors in the bones, stimulating the activity of osteoblasts, which are the cells responsible for bone formation. The drug increases bone remodeling and formation, resulting in an increase in bone mass and strength.
Contraindications:
Gemtide should not be used by patients with hypersensitivity to Teriparatide or any of its ingredients. It is also contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia, severe renal impairment, or a history of bone cancer.
Interactions:
Gemtide may interact with other medications, including diuretics, glucocorticoids, and other medications that affect calcium metabolism. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking before starting Gemtide.
Side Effects:
The most common side effects of Gemtide include headache, nausea, dizziness, joint pain, and leg cramps. Rare but serious side effects may include hypercalcemia, osteosarcoma, and allergic reactions.
Gemtide should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional and with a valid prescription. If you experience any side effects, talk to your doctor immediately.
