Abstet tablets contain 250mg of the active ingredient abiraterone acetate, which inhibits the production of androgens (male hormones) required for the growth and progression of prostate cancer cells. Abiraterone Acetate blocks an enzyme called CYP17, which is required for the production of androgens by the adrenal gland and the prostate gland.
Uses:
Abstet is used to treat metastatic prostate cancer in adult men, which is the most common type of cancer in men. Abiraterone acetate is administered in combination with prednisone or prednisolone, which are corticosteroids that help reduce inflammation, to treat patients with castration-resistant disease.
Dosage and Usage:
The recommended dose of Abstet is 1000mg (four tablets) once daily, taken orally on an empty stomach at least one hour before or at least two hours after eating. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Patients are also advised to take 5mg of prednisone or prednisolone twice daily, as this helps to manage some of the side effects associated with Abstet.
Storage conditions:
Abstet tablets should be stored at room temperature (15-30°C) in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. The tablets should be kept out of reach of children.
Mechanism of Action:
Abstet works by inhibiting the production of androgens (male hormones) required for the growth and progression of prostate cancer cells. Abiraterone Acetate blocks the enzyme CYP17, which is required for the production of androgens by the adrenal gland and the prostate gland. This helps to slow down the growth and spread of prostate cancer cells in the body.
Contraindications:
Abstet is contraindicated in patients who have a hypersensitivity to abiraterone acetate or any of the other ingredients in the tablets. It should also not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Abstet is not indicated in pediatric patients.
Interactions:
Abstet may interact adversely with other medications, including antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, corticosteroids, and certain antiepileptic drugs. Patients should inform their doctor of all medications they are taking before starting treatment with Abstet.
Side Effects:
The most commonly reported side effects of Abstet include hypertension, hypokalemia, back pain, diarrhea, nausea, peripheral edema, and dyspnea. Other possible side effects include fatigue, muscle pain, insomnia, and hot flushes. Patients should inform their doctor if they experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Abstet.
