Prevnar 13® is a vaccine that protects against Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, which causes pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia. It is recommended by the FDA and CDC for routine vaccination of infants, young children, and adults with certain medical conditions. The vaccine helps the body build immunity against 13 pneumococcal serotypes responsible for invasive pneumococcal disease. Prevnar 13® is administered in a series of four doses and works by using a protein to stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies that fight the bacterium.
